Nani Juwara, a distinguished Gambian professional and public servant, has dedicated his career to the advancement of the energy and utilities sector in The Gambia. His journey from a humble beginning to becoming the Minister of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines in March 2024 is a testament to his dedication, expertise, and visionary leadership.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Development Studies and Economics from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada, in 1999. He obtained a Diploma in Principles of Modern Management Economics from the British College of Professional Management in 2001. His academic journey culminated in 2004 with a Master’s degree in Business
Administration specializing in International Management from the University of Southern Denmark.
Mr. Juwara’s professional career started as rank and file in 1994 at The Gambia’s National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), where he rose through the ranks and served in various capacities over nearly three decades. He served as a Credit Control Manager, Commercial Director, Deputy Managing Director, and finally Managing Director from July, 2020.
As Managing Director, he played a pivotal role in transforming the energy and water sectors, implementing strategic reforms to improve service delivery, revenue collection, and infrastructure development. Under his leadership, NAWEC successfully negotiated major power purchase agreements and spearheaded projects aimed at achieving universal access to electricity in The Gambia by end 2025. His contributions earned him recognition, including the Medal of the National Order of the Republic of The Gambia in 2012.
In March 2024, Mr. Juwara was appointed as the Minister of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines, a role that underscores his vast experience in the energy sector. As Minister, he is committed to driving sustainable energy policies, strengthening petroleum and mining governance, and fostering partnerships to enhance energy security and economic growth.
