With a deep understanding of the energy value chain, Saptarshi, a digital technology expert, is a firm believer in the transformative power of digital technologies. He is convinced that these technologies can play a significant role in addressing the energy trilemma, paving the way for an affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy system.
Saptarshi is the head of Shell's global decision science group. He developed the group to support Shell's businesses in making optimal decisions that remain robust in an uncertain future. He and his team use various techniques, including mathematical optimization, statistics, complex simulation, and artificial intelligence, to tackle decision challenges across the energy value chain, including supply chain design, capital allocation, optimal scheduling, and risk management. Additionally, Saptarshi is responsible for driving the digital innovation theme "Adaptive Supply Chain", where he innovates with the ecosystem partners to create a more resilient, cost-efficient and sustainable supply chain for the energy system.
Saptarshi has a Master's in Applied Statistics and Informatics from IIT Bombay and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Vienna. He has worked at Siemens and Morgan Stanley prior to Shell Shell. Saptarshi has published and served as a reviewer in prestigious journals like IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing and SIAM Scientific Computing. He is an inventor of 11 granted patents.
