OVERVIEW

As South and Southeast Asia continue to experience rapid economic growth, electricity demand is rising sharply, and no country alone can ensure secure supply. Enhanced cross-border power trade and grid connectivity will therefore be essential to strengthening long-term energy security in the region.

India’s OSOWOG initiative represents a major opportunity to expand regional power exchange by connecting India with Southeast Asia. Strengthening power connectivity between India and the ASEAN Power Grid—under the notion of “Connecting the connectivities”—could unlock substantial benefits such as investment, technology collaboration, and renewable integration. Yet major challenges remain, including regulatory gaps, infrastructure bottlenecks, and geopolitical complexities.

Several possible pathways for India–ASEAN power connectivity are being considered, but a structured comparative assessment incorporating regional perspectives has not yet been undertaken. This workshop will serve as the initial platform to test preliminary technical and policy framing and gather direct inputs from key regional stakeholders, which will guide the next phase of research and design.
